STS1304C Introduction to Surgical Techniques (AS)

Prerequisites: BSC2086, BSC2086L, HSC2531 (with a grade of C or higher) Corequisites: MCB 2010, MCB 2010L (with a grade of C or higher)

This course teaches the skills necessary to function as a surgical technologist in the operating room including principles of aseptic technique, correct posture for scrubbing, gowning and gloving, draping, and handling of specimens. The basic concepts of microbiology as they apply to the practice of surgery will be covered. Patient psychological needs and assessment, and the processes for obtaining consent for surgery will also be covered.
